How much does it cost to replace brakes
May 03, 2022If your brakes are making a classic squealing sound every time you come to a stop, or the brake pedal feels squishy, you might need new brakes. Usually, this means replacing your brake pads for a new set, but sometimes you will need to resurface your rotors or get a brand new set too. In more complicated situations with older vehicles, you may require new brake lines too. Other brake repairs include seized calipers. The full cost of your brake repair depends on the actual problem which should be diagnosed by the mechanic. Then you can look at changing the brakes yourself at home!
Cost to replace brake pads
Usually, a brake pad replacement will run you around $150 per axle, but it can be $300 per axle if you have fancier brake pads since they cost more in parts. Standard cars have two axles. The stock brake pads are also cheaper than any premium aftermarket offering.
Cost to replace brake rotors
To replace both brake rotors and brake pads at the same time, you are looking at anywhere from $300 to $500+ per axle. This price can go up significantly if you have a performance vehicle with specialized parts that need special attention and are stocked less than stock OEM parts. And this average cost is for a sedan. If you have a tow truck for example, definitely expect to pay a lot more.
Can I replace my own brakes myself?
Naturally, after seeing some of these costs, you might think to yourself… Can I just do it myself? And the answer is yes, you totally can. BUT, keep in mind that doing your brakes is not as easy as an oil change and you need some heavy-duty tools that you might not already have. If you don’t mind spending the time to learn how to replace your own brakes and watching a few YouTube videos, go for it! Over time, you will definitely avoid high labour costs after doing your own brakes a few times.
